THOMAS JEFFERSON ( April 13, 1743 - July 4, 1826 )
Background Information
As a boy, Jefferson's favorite pastimes were playing in the woods, practicing the violin, and reading. He began his formal education at the age of nine, studying Latin and Greek at a local private school run by the Reverend William Douglas. At the age of fourteen, he took up further studyof the classical languages as well as literature and mathmetics with the Reverend James Maury, whom Jefferson later described as a " correct classical scholar." After a few years, he went to the College of William and Mary. His education lead up tp his successful career as being president. Also being the draftsman of the Declarartion of Independence, and being responsible for the Louisiana Purchase.
The Election of 1800
Jefferson was a Democratic-Republican, meaning he wanted a weak federal government and believed in a strict interpretation of the Constitution. Unlike Aaron Burr who traveled to different places to make a point, Jefferson preferred to write letters and get pamphlets published to prove a point about something. When the votes were in, Aaron and Thomas were tied. Hamilton then was able to make the last vote and decide who won. He despised both of the candidates, but choose Jefferson because he despised Burr more.
After the Election
Jefferson was a very good president and handled things very well. The crisis in France had passed. He slashed Army and Navy expenditures, cut the budget, eliminated the tax on whiskey so it would be unpopular in the West, yet reduced the national debt by a third. He also sent a naval squadron to fight the Barbary pirates, who were harassing American commerce in the Maditerranean, and a lot more. Hamilton made the right choose.
